Manchester United apparently pulled out of negotiations to sign Barcelona star Pedro after identifying Saido Berahino as a better alternative to bolster their attacking options.
Pedro was widely expected to move to Old Trafford this summer, but is now on his way to London to undergo a medical with Chelsea after Louis van Gaal vetoed the potential deal.
And that is allegedly because the Dutchman is ready to instead swoop for West Bromwich Albion striker Berahino, who has been the subject of a failed £18m bid from Tottenham Hotspur this week.
The Red Devils have had their eyes on the 22-year-old ever since he opened his Premier League account at Old Trafford in September 2013. He scored against United for a second time last season.
And reports are claiming that Van Gaal had the England Under-21 international scouted over the weekend and is now convinced that he is the right choice to be Wayne Rooney’s deputy.
Berahino scored 14 Premier League goals in the 2014-15 campaign and is thought to be Tottenham’s top target. Spurs are expected to go back in with a second bid, but now seem to have United as competition.
