The Daily Mail have delved into the key reasons behind Petr Cech‘s decision to leave Chelsea and head to London rivals Arsenal this summer.
According to the British newspaper’s investigation, Jose Mourinho was desperate not to strengthen a domestic foe, and was keen for the Czech Republic goalkeeper to seal a move abroad.
Paris Saint-Germain tabled a lucrative offer for Cech worth £100,000, which is a figure the Gunners couldn’t match; however, the north London giants were always leading the chase.
The Daily Mail claim that Cech ignored the pleas of his manager, Mourinho, and wanted his transfer to the Emirates to be granted by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
Abramovich is said to have believed that such has been his service to the Blues, that the stopper should be awarded the right to choose his next club.
After receiving the Russian owner’s blessing in a heart-to-heart discussion, one chat with Arsene Wenger had Cech convinced.
While reports stated that his desire not to uproot his family was key in his moving to Arsenal, in fact it was the prospect of working under Wenger that was pivotal.
Cech is said to have quickly told Mourinho of his decision to join Arsenal in a phone call – not to ask permission, but simply to inform.
