The German international, 27, is set to become a free agent if he does not renew his contract at the Bernabeu before the end of the season, with Arsenal and Manchester United mentioned by the Daily Mail as two potential destinations for the former Stuttgart man.
Schalke are also thought to be one of the clubs chasing Khedira for next season, with Di Matteo himself commenting that he would love the chance to bring him in.
However, the Italian tactician also explained that he feels it will be difficult for Schalke to succeed in luring such a big name when a number of other top clubs are also after him.
Although the former Chelsea boss did not specifically mentioned Premier League clubs, this could come as good news for the likes of Arsenal and United if their interest in the player is real.
“There is not a single coach in the world who would not want to have a player of his calibre in their team,” Di Matteo said.
“The door is wide open for Khedira. However, I think he is spoilt for choice when it comes to picking his next destination.
“It will be very difficult to take him to Schalke.”
