Liverpool are interested in securing a £20m deal for prodigal young attacker Lazar Markovic when the season ends, reports the Metro.
The 20-year-old has been outstanding for Benfica this term, in both the Portuguese top division and the Europa League, where he was especially impressive against Tottenham.
However, contrary reports in the Guardian claim that Markovic is also being targeted by Liverpool’s rivals for the Premier League title this season, Chelsea. There are even rumours that Jose Mourinho’s side have a first option agreement on Markovic, who has interested them since his days as a Partizan Belgrade wonderkid.
It’s no surprise though that Liverpool want to beat the Blues to the Serbian’s signature…
Next season, the Reds will almost definitely be competing in the Champions League, and will need to strengthen their squad as a result. They’ve got away with having very little in terms of top quality backup this season as they haven’t been playing in Europe, but with only the likes of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto in reserve for Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, Rodgers knows he must enter the transfer market.
Markovic has all the attributes Rodgers demands of his attackers. He’s lightning fast, technically astute, and can play in a number of positions. He can play on either flank in an advanced role, but due to his wonderful vision and ability to slide teammates through on goal, he’s comfortable in a pivotal, central no.10 role as well.
It’s unlikely that he’ll be able to immediately dislodge either Sterling, Suarez or Sturridge from the starting XI. With European football imminent though, he would undoubtedly get chances to impress – with injuries, suspensions and the need to rest players next term almost certain.
This season, Markovic has scored five goals in the league from his 17 starts. Despite his young age, he’s already played ten times for his country, but won’t be seen in the World Cup this summer as his nation narrowly missed out on qualification.
