Shevchenko transfer – 2006
Having secured back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005/06 Chelsea were the team to beat and Abramovich was keen to show his club’s intent with a big name transfer.
Against the wishes of Mourinho the owner forced through the then British transfer record purchase of Andriy Shevchenko from AC Milan for a whopping £30.8m.
For a player just a couple of months shy of his 30th birthday this was a colossal amount and Shevchenko’s time at the Bridge was not successful, scoring 20 goals in three seasons.
The deal represented the beginning of the end of the once strong relationship between Abramovich and Mourinho.
