Vfl Wolfsburg
Ambitious German club VfL Wolfsburg have emerged as surprise leading contenders for Lukaku’s signature, with the Bundesliga outfit keen to add another marquee player to their ranks to join the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Luiz Gustavo.
Whether Lukaku would be willing to join a club without Champions League football remains to be seen, however, as does whether Wolfsburg themselves are ambitious enough to meet what are likely to be significant demands from the Belgian.
He would be likely to do extremely well in the Bundesliga, a league not renowned for its world class defending in recent years, but there would be some concern over Lukaku’s ability to link-up with primary creative source De Bruyne after the two struggled to combine effectively for Belgium at the World Cup.
Former Chelsea midfielder De Bruyne was the Red Devils’ leading goalscorer in qualifying – but that tended to be playing off Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke, with Lukaku largely used as an impact substitute by Marc Wilmots.
