It finally look as if the striker is coming to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are set to name Samuel Eto’o as a Blues player after a £6.8m deal has been agreed with Anzhi Makhachkala, reports Mundo Deportivo.
A move for the striker to west London looked uncertain as the club were only prepared to offer the 32-year-old an initial one-year contract.
Yet whilst Eto’o was also linked with former club Inter Milan, it seems a reunion with Jose Mourinho was too good to resist, after the pair won the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League whilst at the San Siro in 2010.
The forward was transfer-listed by Anzhi when the Russian side decided they needed to reduce the wage bill from £120-a-year to £50m – and with the Cameroon international on a colossal £350,000-a-week, it was always likely the attacker would be one of the first to go.
Chelsea have already secured Willian from the club this summer in a somewhat controversial £30m deal and Mourinho now wants to make Eto’o the manager’s second Anzhi acquisition.
The African has had an impressive career to date which has seen the Cameroonian score 286 goals in 529 appearances for club and country, which has also included winning the Champions League three times, La Liga three times and the Africa Cup of Nations twice.
Mourinho wants to strengthen the attack at Stamford Bridge, with the 50-year-old having doubts over the capabilities of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romalu Lukaku.
The club’s first choice was Wayne Rooney, but with Manchester United refusing to sell Eto’o is a very able alternative.
