The San Antonio Spurs have had a disappointing start to the season, and they face a tough road trip to face the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.
San Antonio (2-3) have yet to find the level of intensity and quality that took them to a fifth championship back in June, although injuries and minutes management haven’t helped their early push.
However, coach Gregg Popovich isn’t overly concerned and he believes that things “haven’t gone quite our way” so far and that things will change as they are playing at a solid level.
Nevertheless, the Spurs rank in the bottom three for scoring, field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage through their first five games and with the on-going absences of Marco Belinelli, Patty Mills and Tiago Splitter, there is a concern that things won’t get much better any time soon.
NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard conceded that he is still struggling for vision and rhythm as he continues to recover from an eye infection, and so playing the Clippers on the road is undoubtedly not the game the team would want to be facing at this stage.
The Clippers (4-2) will hope to add to their woes after breaking out of their own early-season funk with a win over the Portland Trail Blazers last time out.
Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will be fundamental as always, although JJ Redick will be looking to build on his 30-point performance and give them support against a Spurs team that will likely look to exploit their rivals in various ways.
Tony Parker bounced back with a season-high 28 points against the New Orleans Pelicans, and should Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili feature as they are expected to, then the Spurs will hope that they can begin to find their chemistry and turn things around as soon as Monday.
