San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for nine games by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
The San Francisco 49ers have had a tumultuous offseason filled with distractions, and the season will not be any easier for them. Outside linebacker Aldon Smith will be suspended for the first nine games of the season.
Smith violated the personal conduct policy by making an idle bomb threat at LAX, driving under the influence of alcohol and illegally carrying an assault weapon.
The 49ers linebacker has been a vital part of their dominant defense for the past three seasons, posting 42 sacks in that span. It was already a big enough blow for the 49ers to adjust to life without inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who is sitting out the first six games on the PUP list.
Here is a tweet from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter confirming the troubled linebacker’s suspension.
