The San Francisco 49ers have found their new head coach, and they decided to hire within as defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was chosen to replace Jim Harbaugh.
Harbaugh and the 49ers mutually parted ways after four seasons, and Harbaugh took the head coaching job at Michigan after leading the 49ers to three NFC Championship trips and a Super Bowl trip.
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase was also being seriously considered as a candidate, but owner Jed York said that he wanted to hire a “teacher.”
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who helped make the 49ers one of the elite defenses in the NFL, is expected to leave the team after being passed over for the job.
Tomsula has previous experience as the 49ers head coach dating back to 2010. Mike Singletary was fired by the team toward the end of the season, and Tomsula took over as the interim head coach before Harbaugh was hired.
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will face a challenge in having a defensive-minded head coach, but the defense is expected to remain one of the more dangerous units in the NFL.
