The San Francisco 49ers had a disappointing season as they finished 8-8 despite being considered favorites to win the Super Bowl, and head coach Jim Harbaugh left after four seasons to take the head coaching post at Michigan.
The team is headed for a potentially rough offseason as some of their key players are set to become free agents. This includes defensive end Justin Smith, who is expected to possibly retire.
However, the 49ers will meet with him before he makes a decision on his future. “Like any player at this stage of his career, he’s going… what I told him was we’re not even going to talk,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said to CSN Bay Area.
Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio leaving the team may affect Smith’s decision, and running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Michael Crabtree may decide to escape what is expected to become a sinking ship as well.
Smith was a vital part of the 49ers’ defensive success over the past few seasons, and he registered 43.5 sacks in six years with the 49ers while being named to five Pro Bowls.
The 49ers will look to bounce back and keep up with the Seattle Seahawks and avoid another letdown season.
