Texans No. 1 overall draft pick DE Jadeveon Clowney will sit out the final game of the preseason after missing the last game to an injury.
The Houston Texans will host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4 of the NFL preseason as both teams try to deal with injuries to the defense.
The 49ers offense has struggled in the preseason, scoring a grand total of 24 points in three games while giving up 64 points – the 49ers had not allowed that many points in any three games stretch in 11 months. QB Colin Kaepernick will likely sit which means backup Blaine Gabbert, who has played terribly in the preseason, will likely see extensive action. The team also put LB NaVorro Bowman on the PUP list, which means he will be out for the first 6 games of the season – forcing San Francisco to find a player worthy of starting in his place.
The Texans have essentially decided that journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the unquestioned starter going into 2014, but the team still needs to choose a backup QB between rookie Tom Savage and 3rd year QB Case Keenum. Savage has reportedly made strides in practices and may get the start on Thursday.
Prediction: 49ers – It may be hard to take them considering their recent preseason woes, but the team should have enough depth to handle whatever the Texans and their uninspiring offense can throw at them.
