The minnows’ twitter account provided some superb entertainment during England’s 8-0 win on Friday.
San Marino may boast the abysmal record of 104 losses in 106 matches, but the European minnows remain a proud, and apparently feisty, nation.
During England’s 8-0 victory in World Cup qualifying on Friday evening, the San Marino FA twitter account was in overdrive, not only trying to keep up with the score but also defending its country from ‘ignorant’ and ‘disgraceful’ attacks from the English media, with everyone from ITV to former England striker Gary Lineker on the receiving end of their impassioned tweets!
Let’s take a look at the action…
BBC’s sports correspondant Dan Roan was the first to make the mistake of describing the match as a ‘formality’.
@danroan That’s a disgrace and sheer ignorance. Shame on you.

Former England striker Gary Lineker was equally unwise, suggesting San Marino represent one of the few easy games in international football.
@garylineker Come on Gary, this is just arrogant and ignorance comment. Stop being jealous because you didn’t play against us.

ITV’s coverage of the match began to ruffle some feathers at San Marino HQ…
ITV should think it more wisely while mocking with San Marino. Shame on you ITV, this is just disgraceful.
— San Marino FA (@SanMarinoFA) March 22, 2013
The continued ‘patronising’ by the broadcaster led to more tweets…
Stop patronising about our team San Marino @itv, that is just sheer ignorance.
— San Marino FA (@SanMarinoFA) March 22, 2013
With England 5-0- up at half-time the San Marino FA took the unusual step of apologising to supporters mid-match…
Still, we’re thankful to all proud to be San Marino supporters. We’re terribly sorry.
— San Marino FA (@SanMarinoFA) March 22, 2013
…before turning their attentions back to ITV.
@itvsport So stop being that rude and ignorant.

At 6-0 down, there was cause for celebration as Fabio Bollini recorded the minnows’ first shot of the match.
Our 1st shoot in this game came from Fabio Bollini. Well done Fabio.

At 8-0 down, speculation began about just how bad it might get…
9-0 was against Spain in 05.06.1999, 10-0 was against Poland in 01.04.2009, 11-0 was against Hollanda in 02.09.2011.

But there was a humble end to the night.
Well done @fa.
