Italian international expected to leave Turin this summer.
Schalke have reportedly stepped up their interest in Juventus striker Alessandro Matri according to reports in Germany.
The Juve marksman is set to leave Turin this summer after the club signed both Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente in order to chase their ambition of European glory.
Director Beppe Marotta has previously suggested that the Bianconeri would have to sell two of their six strikers, with the media in Italy presuming he meant both Matri and Fabio Quagliarella.
As a result, that would leave coach Antonio Conte with a choice from Tevez, Llorente, Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucunic for the year ahead, as the club look to compete on all three fronts.
While Quagliarella appears to be on the shortlist of Premier League side Norwich, there has been a bit of confusion over where Matri will move with Everton recently credited with an interest.
However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, there have been rumours in the German press that Schalke are ready to enter the race to sign the Italian striker.
It remains to be seen whether the Bundesliga outfit can offer what the Serie A champions are requesting for the 28-year-old, while it is also unclear at this stage as to whether a move to Germany would appeal to Matri.
Nevertheless it may offer him a chance of regular first-team football next year, as he looks to work his way back into the plans of Italy boss Cesare Prandelli.
Having scored regularly for Cagliari prior to his move to Turin, Matri has since fallen out of contention on the international scene, but a move to Schalke could well reignite his World Cup dream.
