Scott Mitchell won his first BDO World Darts Championship title on Sunday night, beating three-time winner Martin Adams 7-6 in a pulsating final.
Mitchell, who prior to this year had never progressed beyond round two at Lakeside, had the chance to win 7-5, but he missed a match dart at double 16.
The 44-year-old from Dorset did not dwell on that spurned opportunity though. He broke throw in the first leg of the deciding set with a brilliant 158 checkout – his highest of the tournament.
Legs two and three then went with throw, before Mitchell began the fourth with a 180, followed by two straight tons and an 81.
Adams missed a dart at the bullseye to break back, leaving Mitchell with three darts at tops. He needed just two to seal the win and secure the champion’s cheque worth £100,000.
