Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Athletic Bilbao centre back Fernando Amorebieta after a string of defensive lapses this season.
Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta has revealed through his agent that he is hopeful of a transfer to Arsenal.
Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta for the last few months, particularly because the Venezuelan has just a year remaining on his contract from this summer, and today’s quotes found in the Daily Express piece above only serve to amplify the likelihood of the move taking place.
“We have had contacts with Anzhi, who are very interested in his services, but given the desire to play in England, that move cannot take place,” said Kepa Amorebieta, the player’s agent and brother, in an interview with Marca, translated by the Express.
“We are in contact with Arsenal.”
There is certainly a vacancy to be filled in Arsenal’s defence. Johan Djourou is on loan at Bundesliga club Hannover 96, Ignasi Miquel isn’t ready for first team football yet, and Sebastien Squillaci will probably never be ready again.
With Thomas Vermaelen out of form for much of the season, and Arsene Wenger finally willing to drop his captain based on his poor performances, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are first choice centre backs.
Anyone else would be able to fight for one of their two places, and only Vermaelen offers true competition at present.
Could Amorebieta be the answer? Our scouting report follows on the next two pages.
