The CenturyLink Field has a capacity of 67,000, and will be packed to the rafters in what will beat the second all-time largest standalone crowd in league history, 66,452 for the Seattle v Portland match last October.
The rivalry between the two teams goes some way to explaining the sell-out crowd, but Dempsey’s arrival in MLS has also made a difference, as the Sounders said that they sold 6,000 more tickets for the home contest after his arrival.
Fans who missed out on buying tickets will be able to buy them on the second hand ticket market, but at quite a price.

Dempsey has been taken ill after his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur and missed his first training session, but still remains a possibility for the game at Toronto FC this Saturday, although coach Sigi Schmid says he will be unlikely to play the whole game.
“We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and where his recovery is,” Schmid told reporters at Tuesday’s training session. “We’re still a long way away from Saturday. We’ll see how he feels at the end of the day. The likelihood of him going 90 minutes on Saturday is very small. Whether that’s starting and coming off or coming on as a sub, we’ll have to see.”
The Sounders play Toronto FC on Saturday, 7.00pm EDT at the BMO Field.
