De Vrij is on the verge of signing for Lazio.
Lazio have confirmed that Manchester United target Stefan de Vrij wants to join the Serie A side instead of the more popular Red Devils.
The Italian club’s Sporting Director Igli Tare was quoted saying in the Daily Express; “Many things have been said and written about De Vrij and his transfer to United but this is not true.
“His agent has said clearly that he has never been to Manchester to meet with the English club. De Vrij’s will is to play in Lazio.”
The news comes as a shock to United, who thought they were closing in on a £7 million capture of the 22-year old promising defender from Feyenoord.
The versatile centre-back was seen as one to potentially replace one of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the heart of United’s defence, but it seems as though the English giants’ new boss Louis van Gaal will now have to look at other options.
United are desperate to reinforce their defensive ranks with capable players, and while they have been linked with a number of top quality defenders like Mats Hummels and Atletico Madrid’s Joao Miranda, a lack of Champions League football could deter them in the pursuit of top targets.
