Crespo impressed with Viola strategy this summer.
Former Serie A striker Hernan Crespo has crowned Mario Gomez as the signing of the summer and congratulated Fiorentina on a “major” operation.
The Argentine who played for the likes of Parma, Lazio, Inter, Milan and Genoa during a glittering career in Italy, has suggested that the Viola’s move this summer is by far the most impressive when compared to those of their rivals.
Gomez moved to Florence in a deal worth an initial €15.5m, but that fee could increase with various additional bonuses. The 28-year-old called time on his stay in Munich despite having won the treble last season, as he looks ahead to an exciting new adventure.
Fiorentina have caught the imagination of Europe over the past year through both their brand of football and the squad that they have assembled, with coach Vincenzo Montella expected to build on their fourth-place finish in Serie A last season.
Gomez is joined by the likes of Giuseppe Rossi, Joaquin and Josip Ilicic as new arrivals this summer, and it is understood that the club are not yet finished in their recruitment drive.
However, it is the arrival of the German international that has caught Crespo’s attention, and he believes it is by far the most impressive signing of the summer in Italy.
“I’m not saying that Juventus’ capture of Tevez is normal, but we are more accustomed to seeing such operations carried out by a club of the level of the Bianconeri,” Crespo told TMW as reported by Football Italia.
“Purchasing a player like the former striker of Bayern Munich, a man who is in the prime of his professional maturity and who comes off the back of a season which saw him win everything, is something very different.
“During the past few years the Viola had, primarily, grown players who then became champions such as Gabriel Batistuta and Manuel Rui Costa.
“But signing someone like Gomez is something major,” he concluded.
Gomez is amongst a number of top strikers to join Serie A this summer, with Gonzalo Higuain expected to be unveiled to the Napoli fans on Friday, in addition to both Tevez and Fernando Llorente joining Juventus.
