The players are set to fly home immediately following the conclusion of today’s ODI match in Dharamsala, which could have serious ramifications on future cricketing relations between the two countries.
Having only played three of their five proposed ODI matches, not only will the remainder of the one-day internationals have to be abandoned, but a one-off Twenty20 international and three Test matches will also be cancelled.
The dispute is with the West Indies Players Association over the reallocation of sponsorship payments, with the new agreement seeing funds more widely spread throughout the islands for the furtherment of West Indian cricket.
The decision was confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, who were understandably none too pleased with the decision and had this to say, “The withdrawal gives little thought to the future of the game, the players and the long-standing relations between the BCCI and the WICB,” said honorary secretary Sanjay Patel.
“This is a unilateral decision taken by the WICB and its players, in spite of several appeals to the WICB to honour its commitment and complete the series.”
