The Uruguayan hit man sided with his South American compadre over the equally prolific Ronaldo, who pipped Messi to the Ballon d’Or title back in December.
But not only does Suarez think his teammate is the better player, he also took a swipe at the Real Madrid legend by claiming that he doesn’t perform at the same level he once did.
“Messi is natural, it is his character. He is the best in the world,” Suarez told prestigious Algerian football magazine Le Buteur, “but he was born with his qualities.
“Ronaldo has progressed and worked a lot to perform how he does. He’s not at the same level he was when he started.
“I think Leo is the best.”
Ronaldo has been keeping Real Madrid in the hunt for the La Liga title, as well as the Champions League, which could well pit the Clasico rivals against one another in the final, should the Spaniards overcome Juventus in the semi final on Wednesday evening.
Suarez linked up with Barca last summer, and is finally starting to rediscover his scoring touch, but despite that, he took some time to praise former club Liverpool.
“With everything that I learned technically and tactically… I would say Liverpool gave me everything, it’s an extroardinary club.
“In England every game is important and the fans are formidable. At Barcelona it’s a bit different. I try to enjoy myself and to win every time I set foot on the pitch.”
