The 24-year-old has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, first being linked with the club last summer whilst still with PSV, before eventually moving to the Italian capital in a £15m deal – what has happened in the space of just over a year to see his value rise so astronomically?
The Dutch international certainly contributed to Roma’s strong season, in which they finished second to eventual champions Juventus, though even then the player spent some time out injured, limiting him to 25 Serie A appearances in total, and with no guarantee that he will immediately come back and impress again straight away.
United manager Louis van Gaal is known to be a big fan of Strootman, having worked with him during his time in charge of the Netherlands national team, but it’s hard to imagine that even the big-spending new Old Trafford boss would pay that much for this particular player, who is surely not better than Angel Di Maria, despite being more expensive.
With Juventus star Arturo Vidal possibly available for just over £40m, surely United will now look elsewhere for new signings in midfield?
