Diego Costa was a risk – and Jose Mourinho should have known better

Mourinho took a huge gamble in playing Diego Costa on Saturday, and the bet didn’t pay off.

The striker needs a rest – and deservedly so – he has started almost all of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures, scoring 19 times, and the Blues are in such control at the top of the table that Costa could have been rested.

Loic Remy, after all, has an impressive goalscoring record since arriving at Stamford Bridge – and netted the winner on Saturday afternoon.
