Jordy Clasie was one of the marquee signings for Southampton this past year. Can he elevate that prized defense into a Europa League contender?
Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie will make his Premier League debut this season, but says he would’ve turned down offers from mega clubs to choose the Saints.
According to the Mirror, Clasie declared that he would’ve even turned down a bid from Manchester United in order to sign with Southampton on a £10.5 million deal. Clasie played for Man United manager Louis van Gaal as a member of the Netherlands national team on his 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.
“If the United interest had become concrete I think I still would have preferred Southampton,” Clasie said. “It’s better to start lower and finish higher than the other way round.”
The 24-year-old Clasie has made 11 caps as a member of the Netherlands national team with several starts coming in the 2014 World Cup tournament.
The former Eredivisie star scored 10 goals in stints with Excelsior and Feyenoord, with a 43-game season of effective play earning Jordy Clasie a spot on Ronald Koeman’s squad.
Southampton finished with the second-fewest goals allowed in the 2014-15 Premier League season, but offensive struggles resulted in just a 7th place finish with a Europa League third qualifying round berth.
