Two of Luis Scolari’s key players will miss the high-profile showdown.
The Socceroos have been given a significant boost ahead of the glamour friendly with Brazil after it was revealed Hulk and Dani Alves will play no part in the match.
A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), reported by Goal, confirmed the duo had been ruled out, with Barcelona defender Alves suffering from knee tendonitis and Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk struggling to overcome a thigh complaint.
The Selecao duo, key players in Luis Scolari’s side, have travelled already South America from Spain and Russia respectively to be assessed by the national team’s medical staff and are expected to be treated while on international duty.
However, given the extent of their injuries, they have also been ruled out of the clash with Portugal on September 10.
Alves absence is likely to give Roma defender Maicon a chance to reclaim the right back spot in Scolari’s starting XI, while Atletico Mineiro forward Marcos Rocha has been called up to replace Hulk.
Australia have injury problems of their own after Tim Cahill was forced to withdraw from the squad after damaging his ankle playing for New York Red Bulls at the weekend – with Football Federation Australia confirming that Holger Osieck has opted not to bring in a replacement for the midfielder.
