The entertaining semi-final was shortened following a two-hour rain delay, with the Kiwi’s set a mega total of 298 off just 43 overs.
Grant Elliott’s six with two balls remaining sealed it for the co-hosts, who will now face either Australia or India at the MCG in Sunday’s final.
A distraught de Villiers gave credit to the New Zealanders but said his side were gutted with the loss.
“It’s really painful. We have no regrets,” de Villiers is quoted as saying by the ABC.
“We left everything out here on the field tonight there’s no doubt about that. We had our opportunities here and there so it’ll take us a while to get over this.
“Credit to the New Zealanders – they played a wonderful game of cricket today and all the best to them in the final.”
De Villiers himself was in solid form with the bat, knocking up a quick-fire 65 as the Proteas looked to have built up an excellent total.
It wasn’t to be however, with the Black Caps getting over the line in one of the most exciting games in World Cup history.
