The defending champions ended the Dragons’ great run and recorded a much-needed victory at ANZ Stadium.
South Sydney took an early 2-0 lead with a penalty goal from Adam Reynolds. But the Dragons hit back with a try to Gareth Widdop.
Souths responded with Aaron Gray scoring in the corner.
Just before half-time Jason Nightengale crossed to put the Dragons in front.
Early in the second half, Gray bagged his second four-pointer.
With 21 minutes left, Alex Johnston dived over and the Rabbitohs were 16-10 in front. The game had turned and the Rabbitohs were in control.
The Dragons heaped on pressure to find an equaliser. But South Sydney’s defence held time and time again.
It got niggly and tempers rose in the last few minutes but the Rabbitohs scraped home to break their drought.
