Southampton were quick out of the blocks against Everton, and took an early lead thanks to an own goal from stand in centre back Antolin Alcaraz.
When the ball broke to Rickie Lambert on the left flank, he cut inside onto his favoured right foot before sending in a teasing in-swinging cross, which Alcaraz headed into his own net in an attempt to clear.
After half an hour of play, it was 2-0, with Saints fortunate to benefit from another own goal.
Seamus Coleman was the man to head a Southampton cross beyond Tim Howard this time, and despite a debatable penalty shout on Leon Osman, Roberto Martinez and his men headed back to Goodison Park pointless.
Mauricio Pochettino meanwhile has done Arsene Wenger and Arsenal quite a large favour, with the Gunners now a point ahead of Everton with a game in hand.
