Uruguayan international made his name in Serie A prior to switch.
The agent of Southampton ace Gaston Ramirez has revealed that his client could return to Italy given his lack of playing time at the club.
The former Bologna midfielder has struggled for regular first-team action so far this season under boss Mauricio Pochettino, and while he respects his decision he is keen to secure more playing time.
As a result, his agent has conceded that a return to Italy in January could be a possibility, with Ramirez also hopeful of securing his place in the Uruguay squad for the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
“[Southampton] President Cortese likes Gaston a lot,” Pablo Bentancur told tuttomercatoweb, as reported by Football Italia.
“He’s always treated us very well, but there is a problem – the Coach does not play him.
“We respect the choice of Pochettino, because it’s up to him to choose who plays.
“But Gaston is a great player and wants to feel comfortable.
“You’d have to talk to Cortese to see if they’re going to sell. But can he return to Italy? Yes, I think he can.”
The 22-year-old played an integral role in Bologna’s fortunes prior to his switch to the Premier League, but it is unclear at this stage as to whether or not a return is feasible.
Nevertheless, interest is expected to be high for the Uruguayan international when the January transfer window opens, with a whole host of clubs previously linked with a move.
Amongst those clubs was Galatasaray, but it remains to be seen whether or not a move to Turkey appeals to Ramirez, with speculation also suggesting that a number of the top clubs in Serie A have been monitoring his situation.
