Southampton have announced that Jay Rodriguez suffered a rupture of his anterior cruciate knee ligament in the club’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City at the weekend.
The forward player had to be withdrawn before half time with what instantly appeared a serious injury, and the south coast club state that he will miss the rest of the season and this summer’s 2014 FIFA World Cup.
It is estimated that it will be six months before Rodriguez plays again.
It comes as a great shame both for Southampton and personally for the player, for Rodriguez is the second highest English scorer in the Premier League with 15 goals – as many as Wayne Rooney, and only Daniel Sturridge with 20 strikes ahead of him.
