Austin has hit the back of the net 17 times for QPR this season, but it wasn’t enough to stop the London side from being relegated to the Championship.
The 25-year-old has one year remaining on his current deal at QPR, but is believed to be desperate to remain in the Premier League.
According to Daily Express, the Saints are preparing a £10m bid for the England international but will face stiff competition with a raft of Premier League sides believed to be interested.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are reported to have shown interest in Austin, while Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion have also thrown their hats into the ring in a bid to sign the former Burnley and Swindon Town man.
Austin will reportedly command wages of between 50-60k per week, a major improvement on his current £28k-a-week deal at QPR.
