Saints eyeing duo.
Southampton boss Alan Pardew is targeting Birmingham’s Scott Dann and Celtic striker Gary Hooper in January, reports Italian website CalcioMercato.
Adkins will be handed money to spend next month to help drag his side away from the bottom three of the Premier League and the tactician wants to improve his leaky defence, whilst bringing in another proven goalscorer.
Southampton have shipped in 32 goals in 16 games so Adkins is aware that a new defender is a must.
Liverpudlian Dann would certainly beef-up Saints back-line, although the 25-year-old was part of both the Rovers and Birmingham City sides that failed to beat the drop.
But Dann earned a reputation at St Andrew’s as a very solid centre-back and one that would certainly improve on what is currently in the St Mary’s armoury.
Up front, the former Scunthorpe United boss wants to bring in his former charge Gary Hooper, who is working wonders at Celtic.
The Harlow-born forward has scored 64 goals in 110 games for the Parkhead side, leading to talk of a possible England call-up, which would become more of a reality if he was plying his trade in the Premier League.
However, it seems unlikely Hooper would look to make the move back south of the border with Celtic still in the Champions League and riding high at the top of the SPL, particularly as he could end up making a move to the English top tier only to then end up as part of a side that sinks back to the Championship.
