Saints beat Liverpool to the England international.
Southampton have managed to find a decent replacement for their departed left-back Luke Shaw in the form of Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand.
The Saints faced competition from the likes of Liverpool for the ex-Champions League winner, but the prospect of more regular football at St. Mary’s for the 24-year old has sealed the deal Southampton’s way.
“For me personally, this is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that’s moving in the right direction,” Bertrand was quoted by the Mirror.
Bertrand is not a part of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s immediate plans at Stamford Bridge, and one will not be surprised if the Blues also agree to sell him on a permanent deal next season if they get the right price.
Liverpool meanwhile, would feel aggrieved at not being able to snap up the signing as they were reportedly close to the England international’s £8 million signature this summer.
Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers might have to look more intensely for a new left-back in the coming weeks to strengthen the area after having missed out on a number of their left back targets this summer.
