Just a week after signing one Argentine born attacker, Mauricio Pocchettino is set to raid Valencia CF for another.
Southampton are looking to take Valencia CF winger Pablo Piatti on loan for the season.
The Daily Mail claim that whilst Piatti turned away Everton, Celtic and Rennes as he wished to stay in Spain, it’s possible that the Latin influence of his compatriot Mauricio Pocchettino could sway him.
Piatti earned his one and only cap for Argentina at just 22 years of age and, given his tiny stature and preferred left foot, naturally drew comparisons with Lionel Messi.
Piatti’s development faltered following his departure from Almeria in 2011 though, and last season he only featured 14 times in the league for Valencia.
With Southampton allowing Jason Puncheon to leave on loan for league newcomers Crystal Palace there is no doubt that Piatti could play a role within the squad should he choose to join the Saints, with Guly do Prado and captain Adam Lallana the only remaining wide-men at St. Mary’s.
With the huge outlaying seen by Southampton this summer, including £12.8m on Daniel Osvaldo and £12.5m on Victor Wanyama, it is unlikely that there will be any more spending at the club – hence the loan move.
