Nathaniel Clyne has described his England debut as the best day of his life, after the 23-year-old Southampton defender started the 3-1 win over Slovenia on Saturday.

The Daily Express explains that the Saints full-back impressed manager Roy Hodgson, as he helped his country extend their lead at the top of their Euro 2016 qualification group.

A delighted Clyne said: “It was probably one of the best days of my life. It’s what I’ve been dreaming about ever since I was a little boy, playing for England, and I got to do it today.

“It’s a great feeling to come out here and play at Wembley for England. It’s a proud moment for me, my family and my friends. “I tried to play my normal game, as it’s my normal game that has got me this call-up. If I played how I play for my club I knew it would be good enough.”

After all, it has been Clyne’s impressive performances for the South Coast club that caught the eye of Hodgson. Ronald Koeman’s side are riding high in second place in the Premier League and the young defender has been pivotal in Southampton’s brilliant start to the season.Clyne praised England’s performance against Slovenia despite conceding an own-goal through Jordan Henderson in the 57th minute: “Once we conceded a fluke of a goal, we got our heads together, went up another gear and Slovenia couldn’t handle it,” he said.

“We’ve won all our games so far and we’re looking to win again in our next one – the friendly to Scotland – so hopefully we can do the same.”
