Mathieu heats up and impresses in his 40-yard dash.
Despite his troubled past, Tyrann Mathieu arrived at the NFL Combine with the sole aim of impressing the watching teams with his skills on the field.
The 2011 Heisman finalist was kicked out of LSU last year after multiple failed drug tests, before being arrested for possession of marijuana.
However, having been through rehab and counselling in order to correct his problems, Mathieu is now keen to impress, and that he did on Tuesday morning at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with an unofficial 4.43 40-yard dash.
Considering his inactivity over the past year and off-the-field distractions, his time left many, including NFL.com’s Deion Sanders, impressed as he also looked good in the backpedal drill, turning and running quickly.
He disappointed in the bench press drill, putting up just four reps at 225 pounds, but more than made up for it in the dash, something few expected he would do. He went on to run a flat 4.5 in his second attempt.
Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner stole the headlines after clocking in at 4.31 and 4.37. However, having demonstrated his speed on Tuesday, coupled with his playmaking ability, Mathieu certainly did no harm to his own prospects.
Ultimately he still has a lot to prove including the issues he spoke about in his media session of getting teams to trust him, but Mathieu has made a positive start.
