Agent believes striker has earned the interest that has been shown in him across Europe. The Daily Mirror is reporting that Tottenham Hotspur could be in line to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke during the Summer.
The 22 year-old has been the one bright spark during a dreadful season for the Villans, notching up 11 league goals and keeping Villa the right side of the relegation zone.
Benteke’s agent suggested that the Belgian is deserved of the attention he has received, but also underlined that his player’s focus is solely on helping Aston Villa survive the drop right now.
“It is normal that if you go to a club and do well, then other clubs will show an interest.” Erik Kismet, Benteke’s agent said.
“Christian has shown that he can play in England so why not take the step up to the next level if the opportunity is there?
“At the end of the season, interested clubs will talk to Villa, but it has to be right for Villa, the buying club and Christian.
“If all three parties are agreeable, something could happen, but right now his focus is on Villa, helping them stay in the Premier League.”
It is this kind of form of being able to keep up an impressive scoring record whilst playing on a poor team, that is garnering interest from bigger clubs. Spurs are just the latest team in a long line of Premier League and European heavyweights that are interested in the front man and it could make sense for him to join them.
With Jermain Defoe constantly battling injuries, Emmanuel Adebayor not hitting consistent form, and Clint Dempsey struggling to make any sort of impact in Tottenham’s system, it would be wise to sign powerful striker this Summer.
With a predatory instinct, Benteke could form a impressive front-line partnership with a healthy Defoe, which could help manager Andres Villas-Boas cement Spurs as a top four team.
While his agent will repeatedly say that the 22 year-old is focused on helping his current club stay in the Premier League, there will no doubt be discussions going on between the agent and his client as to where Benteke could be playing his football next season, which almost certainly won’t be at Aston Villa.
