Five-eighth to become a Dragon for four years in a lucrative deal.
England international Gareth Widdop will leave Melbourne Storm to take up a four-year deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons from the 2014 NRL season, the club said on Friday.
Widdop, 24, who has played scrum-half, fullback and centre for his club and country, agreed to terms after meeting with St George Illawarra officials this week.
The signing follows this week’s announced departure of regular playmaker and goalkicker Jamie Soward on a four-year deal to Penrith Panthers from 2014.
Originally from Halifax in England, Widdop relocated to Melbourne with his family when he was 16 and progressed through the Melbourne Storm ranks to the top grade.
Widdop became a regular member of the successful Storm team in 2011 and has missed just one game over the past two seasons, capturing a NRL premiership title and World Club Challenge along the way.
In June 2010 Widdop made his international debut at fullback for England against France.
