Chelsea will offer a new contract to Thibaut Courtois, who is expected to sign, before heading back to Spain for a fourth season with Atletico Madrid, reports the Daily Mail.
The 21-year-old Belgian stopper has established a reputation as one of the very best in the world, and has been a cornerstone of Atletico’s wonderful season. The Spanish side currently top La Liga, and are well placed in their Champions League quarterfinal with Barcelona.
Chelsea though already have the experienced 31-year-old stalwart Petr Cech between the sticks. Cech has marshalled the Blues well this season, with his side enjoying the best defensive record in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to let Courtois go, but similarly, has no reason to replace Cech in goal. As a result, he’s happy to secure Courtois’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, before letting him continue his impressive development in Spain next term.
It would be the fourth year the Belgian no.1 has spent with Atletico on loan, which is virtually unprecedented.
