The 34-year-old will draw the curtain on a glittering 17-year playing career at the club over the summer as his contract expires.
But the former England man has promised this will not be the last Reds fans see of him as he has designs on returning one day as manager.
“I still see myself as a player, and I know how tough it is to be a manager,” he said.
“It is obviously a big dream of mine, but you have to be good enough first and foremost. It’s not just about saying you want to be a manager or you are going to be a manager.”
However, Gerrard indicated that he is not ready to make the switch from the pitch to the dugout just yet.
“If you want to be a manager, you have to go out and prove yourself.
“It’s a long way away, I’ve still got a few years left to play and that is my main focus at the moment.”
