Robin van Persie reportedly decided that his Manchester United career was over following training ground humiliation at the hands of manager Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman is expected in Istanbul on Monday to complete a £4.7m transfer to Fenerbahce.
He reported back to Manchester for pre-season training and crunch talks with Van Gaal this week, but was ordered to practice on his own due to speculation over his future.
The Daily Star claims that is was then that Van Persie, feeling betrayed by his compatriot, gave his agent the thumbs up to green light his £240,000-per-week switch to Turkey.
The 31-year-old is said to have been hurt by the actions of Van Gaal, whom he considered a close friend after their strong bond when one was captain and the other manager of the Netherlands national team.
Van Persie scored 58 goals in 104 games for United after his controversial transfer from Arsenal in 2012.
