Speaking at a press conference while on international duty, as reported by Sky Sports, the Bayern Munich ace insisted that Depay is still young and has plenty of room for improvement.
The Dutchman joined United in the summer and was expected to have a significant impact under Louis van Gaal having worked with his compatriot at the 2014 World Cup.
However, after initially getting an opportunity to shine, Depay has lost his place in the starting line-up with Jesse Lingard now impressing instead.
In turn, that leaves the 21-year-old with just two goals and two assists in 14 appearances in all competitions so far this season, although he did play a crucial role in getting United into the Champions League after scoring twice in the qualification round.
Nevertheless, his form and lack of confidence will be a concern for the Old Trafford faithful, and it remains to be seen when he is able to break back into the team given that Lingard has now provided an assist and scored a stunning goal in his last two games against CSKA Moscow and West Bromwich Albion respectively.
While that would seem like a cause for concern, Robben has backed his international teammate to get back on track and overcome a difficult period in his career that all of their peers have been through.
With United continuing to compete on various fronts, it is arguably a matter of time before Van Gaal opts to rotate his squad and that could well lead to Depay getting another chance to impress. Furthermore, Depay will be patient given that it is his first year in England, and perhaps it is only natural that he is taking time to adjust to the Premier League.
