For the first time since February Sunderland are out of the relegation zone after beating fellow strugglers Cardiff City 4-0 at the Stadium if Light.
A brace from Connor Wickham and goals from Fabio Borini and Emanuele Giaccherini helped the Black Cats ease past 10-man Cardiff.
The result leaves the Bluebirds in serious danger of going down themselves as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men drop to bottom place.
The Black Cats are up to 17th though with a game in hand, ahead of Norwich City bu virtue of goal difference and marks what has been a great period for Gus Poyet’s side.
A draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium was followed by a shock victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend, in a time when Wickham has netted five times in three games.
The 21-year-old has been in brilliant form recently and opened the scoring against Cardiff with a looping header from a Giaccherini free-kick.
Wickham was then adjudged to have been fouled by Juan Cala in the box – with the midfielder seeing red – and Borini converted the spot kick.
Giaccherini then made the most of poor defending from the visitors, before the England Under-21 international then secured his second with another header, this time from a corner.
