Di Canio ready to splash out on versatile star.
Sunderland have stepped up their interest in signing Juventus’ Emanuele Giaccherini with a reported £8.6m bid.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 28-year-old has caught the eye of Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio with his impressive performances at the Confederations Cup last month.
The former Siena man is capable of playing in various positions, and has been deployed in a numbe of positions by both Antonio Conte and Cesare Prandelli over the last couple of years.
However, Giaccherini has never been able to cement his place in the starting line-up in Turin, playing a bit-part role in the club’s successive Scudetto triumphs.
As a result, it remains to be seen whether he is happy to remain with the Serie A champions for another year with limited playing time, particularly when considering his aspirations of being on the plane to Brazil again next year for the World Cup.
He scored three goals in 17 Serie A appearances last season, but Di Canio has reportedly seen enough to warrant a big money offer for the international.
Having avoided relegation last season, the Italian tactician is looking to bolster his options ahead of the new campaign, and has been linked with a variety of names across his homeland.
Having had an initial bid of around €8m rebuffed, Di Canio would appear intent on landing the Juventus man, while he is also looking to tie up loan deals for Inter youngsters Alfred Duncan, Daniel Bassa and Ibrahim Mbaye.
