Sunderland are aiming to offer England international Jack Rodwell an escape route from his Manchester City nightmare, as they prepare to swoop for the injury-plagued midfielder.
The Sunderland Echo understands that the Black Cats are looking to secure the 23-year-old on loan, while West Brom and Rodwell’s former club Everton are also interested.
Gus Poyet’s side are anxious for midfield reinforcements this summer after losing Jack Colback (now with Newcastle), Craig Gardner (West Brom) and former loanee Ki Sung-Yueng (back with Swansea) at the end of last season.
Rodwell joined City in August 2012, but has managed just 26 appearances in all competitions over the last two years. He appeared just five times in the Premier League during City’s successful title winning campaign last season and, despite being capped by England as recently as last year, is believed to be available in a cut-price deal.
It has been suggested that City would attempt to use Rodwell as part of the deal to bring Everton’s Ross Barkley to the club, but the Toffee’s have insisted that their star man is not for sale, regardless of whether or not they receive Rodwell in part exchange.
That has opened the doors for the likes of Sunderland, who could tempt City with a straight cash offer.
