Broncos K Matt Praeter set numerous field goal records in 2013. The Broncos will now lose him for the first month of 2014.
The NFL has announced that it has suspended Broncos K Matt Praeter for four games after he tested positive for alcohol.
While alcohol is not a banned substance under the substance abuse policy, Praeter was required to stay sober and subject to random testing after enter the NFL’s alcohol-abuse program following a 2011 DUI.
“I’ve made some mistakes,” Prater said in The Denver Post. “I’m accepting full responsibility. I’ll learn from it and come back a better person. I want to apologize to my teammates, my coaches, the Broncos’ organization and the fans.”
Prater will be eligible to return in Week 6 against the New York Jets (the Broncos have a bye in Week 5).
Prater set numerous franchise and NFL records in 2013 for most PATs with 75 as well as the longest FG in NFL history – a 64-yarder. His 96.2% FG percentage led the league and earned him a Pro Bowl selection in the 2013 season.
