Switzerland are largely expected to emerge from Group E and qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup. They enjoyed an impressive qualification campaign which saw them remain undefeated throughout, picking up seven wins and three draws from 10 contests.
Although the Swiss team is built on a solid defence, which conceded just six goals in qualification, they also have an exciting attacking verve about them as well. Xherdan Shaqiri of Bayern Munich and Josip Drmic of Nuremberg are two very highly rated young forwards, although it was defender Fabian Schar who was their top scorer in qualification with just three goals.
No great things are really expected of Ecuador in this tournament, although, having finished ahead of Uruguay in qualification they are clearly a decent side. However, they were very much reliant on their home form at that stage with all seven of their victories coming on their own patch.
Their star players include the likes of Felipe Caicedo, formerly of Manchester City, and Antonio Valencia, currently at Manchester United. They are certainly solid enough, but will not threaten good sides in Brazil.
Switzerland are rightly the favourites to win this game but there will not be a lot in it with conditions in Brazil favouring the Ecuadorians. It would be a surprise if there were many goals in the game and there should certainly not be more than two between the sides.
This is unlikely to be one of the more thrilling contests in Brazil this summer and you can expect the Europeans to narrowly edge out their South American opponents.
