Former QPR captain Neill returns to Australia to see out playing days.
Socceroos captain Lucas Neill will return to Australian football after signing with Sydney FC until the end of the domestic A-League season, the club said Saturday.
“We’re thrilled Lucas has joined Sydney FC,” coach Frank Farina said.
“He is the current Socceroo captain and one of Australia’s most decorated players but more importantly he is a tremendous defender and he will make a valuable contribution in the run in to the semi-final series.”
Reports had suggested Neill could sign with Melbourne Heart but the defender said he made the decision Saturday to join Sydney’s Sky Blues, whose line-up boasts Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero.
“I’m a Sydney boy and I’m excited to be coming back to Australia to play club football in front of friends and family with Sydney FC,” the 34-year-old said.
“I worked with Frank (Farina) for many years in the Socceroos and I look back on those times with good memories, and it’s great to have the chance to enjoy further success together at Sydney FC.”
Neill, who has played for Australia at two World Cups, will begin training with Sydney FC on Sunday and will be available for selection for the match against Melbourne Heart next weekend.
The defender had been on the lookout for a new club since being released by United Arab Emirates club Al Wasl a fortnight ago.
