Officials will look to increase presence of police in the wake of Boston bombings.
Security at the Sydney marathon later this year is set to be upgraded after the fatal bombings in Boston which have shocked the world.
Explosions set off near the end of the marathon, which at this stage have killed three and injured more than 100, have caused officials in Australia to rethink their plans.
Athletics Australia chief executive Dallas O’Brien said his main concern for now was for the victims of the yet to be explained attack.
However, he said when the timing is right he will further examine the security arrangements for the Sydney Marathon, which traditionally crosses the Harbour Bridge.
”We manage and run the Sydney Running Festival and we work really closely with all the authorities to put on that event. We run over the Sydney Harbour Bridge so all our risk management plans and security need to be really tight and spot on,” O’Brien said.
”We work really closely with NSW police and they are aware of what has happened and will be looking even more closely at the procedures for our event in September.”
Several Australians were in Boston competing as part of the marathon with Olympians Lee Troop and Jeff Hunt and paralympians Kurt Fearnley, Christie Dawes and Nathan Arkley all safe.
Fearnley reacted angrily after the explosions through Twitter:
Couple of freaky explosions from the Marathon finish line. Bit of a spin out?? Any news???
