Socceroos star has penned a one-year deal with the Sky Blues.
Sydney FC new-boy Richard Garcia revealed the opportunity to play alongside Alessandro Del Piero persuaded him to sign for the two-time A-League champions.
The Australia midfielder penned a one-year deal with the Sky Blues on Friday after failing to agree fresh terms with Melbourne Heart, with whom he spent the previous season following his release from Hull City.
Newcastle Jets were also reportedly interested in the 31-year-old, but he admits the thought of sharing a dressing room with the legendary Del Piero, who he considers to be the most distinguished player he will call a team-mate in his career, was too enticing to turn down.
”Playing for a big club like Sydney and with Del Piero is an exciting prospect,” Garcia explained to The World Game.
”It is a great opportunity to play alongside such a great player.
”He’s probably the highest profile team-mate I will ever have.”
Garcia will commence training with Sydney once they return from their pre-season tour of Italy and tweeted his delight at signing for the club ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.
Thanks to all your welcoming tweets I’m looking forward to big season in the skyblue.
